What these numbers mean
- Rent: The Q2 2026 average asking rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the named Census Metropolitan Area or CMA part. This is a rental-listing benchmark, not a guaranteed rent or neighborhood quote. The estimate is experimental and can be revised.
- Take-home pay: A standard-employee 2026 annualized estimate using the selected province’s payroll rules. Quebec is handled separately: enter your annual net pay from a payroll estimate and check Revenu Québec’s official deduction rules.
- Family and other monthly costs: Enter your own monthly estimate for food, transport, childcare, school costs, health cover, debt and essentials. These amounts vary by province, child age, status and household. Leave blank to see the amount after rent only; they are not part of the published rent benchmark. Check possible child and family benefits with the official CRA calculator ↗ and confirm eligibility before counting benefits.
- NexStepia City Fit: Enter available cash, one-time moving costs and months until your first paycheque. The estimate subtracts move costs and each month’s rent and other entered costs from your cash. Cities with enough cash through payday and a non-negative monthly surplus rank first; cities with a transition shortfall or ongoing monthly deficit rank lower. If you leave these fields blank, cities rank by monthly leftover. This is a planning comparison, not a guarantee of affordability.
- Compare fairly: Use the same salary across cards to isolate location costs, or edit each city’s offer when comparing actual opportunities. Cards show rent as a share of monthly take-home and money left after the rent and costs you enter.
