Australia · medical radiation practice

Plan migration assessment and professional registration as two connected steps.

This route is for diagnostic radiographers and medical imaging technologists working with X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography and related imaging. For skilled migration, ASMIRT assesses overseas qualifications for relevant occupations such as Medical Diagnostic Radiographer. To practise as a medical radiation practitioner in Australia, registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia through Ahpra is a separate requirement.

Keep the two decisions separate: an ASMIRT skills assessment letter supports the migration process; it is not professional registration. Ahpra/MRPBA registration governs practice. A visa invitation or positive skills assessment does not automatically authorize clinical work.

Build the route in this order

01 · CONFIRM YOUR DIVISION

Choose diagnostic radiographer, radiation therapist or nuclear medicine technologist according to your training and work. This guide focuses on diagnostic radiography; other divisions may have different evidence and assessment requirements.

02 · CHECK ASMIRT'S OVERSEAS ASSESSMENT

Review the current overseas assessment instructions for the migration occupation that fits your background. Prepare formal qualification records, transcripts, clinical placement details, work history and supporting documents in the format requested.

03 · APPLY FOR AHPRa/MRPBA REGISTRATION

Use the Board's international applicant and qualification-assessment route. The Board assesses whether an overseas qualification is suitable for the requested division and can require further evidence or steps. Meet registration standards, including English-language and other applicable standards.

04 · CHECK STATE OR TERRITORY REQUIREMENTS

Radiation-use licences or additional authorizations may apply depending on where and how you will work. Confirm the specific rules with the relevant state or territory authority and the employer.

05 · MATCH THE VISA TO THE ASSESSMENT

Check Home Affairs' current skilled occupation list and the exact visa stream. Keep occupation code, assessment authority, registration status and employer sponsorship evidence consistent across applications.

Evidence to prepare

  • Degree/diploma, official transcript and detailed subject descriptions.
  • Clinical placement record with modality, hours, procedures and supervision.
  • Employment references listing dates, hours, modality mix, equipment and duties.
  • Current or previous registration, good standing and identity/name documents.
  • Accepted English-language evidence and certified translations where needed.
Modality detail helps: identify X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy and image-guided procedures separately. A broad job title alone may not show your actual training and scope.
