Plan your MLT licensing route before you plan your move.

For internationally educated Medical Laboratory Technologists (IEMLTs), the licensing route depends on the destination province, education, laboratory experience and fields of practice. This guide separates professional registration from immigration credential assessment and turns current published CAMLPR fees into an editable planning estimate.

Key distinction: an immigration Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is not a licence to practise. You must follow the professional assessment and registration route for the province or territory where you intend to work. Passing national exams also does not guarantee registration or employment.

The current pathway at a glance

01 · CHOOSE THE JURISDICTION + FIELD

Confirm the authority and assessment route for the province or territory. Apply only in fields supported by your education and hands-on experience.

02 · START THE CAMLPR PATHWAY

For participating jurisdictions, create an applicant account and complete the self-administered readiness assessment.

03 · COMPLETE PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT

CAMLPR reviews academic learning, clinical education, employment history and language evidence. A gap may lead to an Education Plan before exam eligibility.

04 · WRITE ELIGIBLE FIELD EXAMS

Exam eligibility follows the assessment result. CAMLPR has field-specific exams; exam fees depend on fields and whether an official bundle can be taken in one appointment.

05 · FINISH ORIENTATION + APPLY TO THE REGULATOR

Complete the Professional Practice Orientation and submit a separate provincial registration application where required. The regulator makes its own decision.

Fields assessed

Depending on your background and intended scope, CAMLPR lists Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Clinical Microbiology, Transfusion Medicine (Science), Histology, Cytology, Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics. The assessment is field-specific; apply only where your education and experience give you a relevant foundation.

Documents to start organizing

  • Official transcripts and course descriptions; CAMLPR says international credentials require a WES Course-by-Course ICAP evaluation with verified transcripts.
  • Clinical education verification from the school and/or laboratory where training occurred.
  • Employment verification with dates, laboratory departments, tests, methods, equipment and specimens handled.
  • Proof of language proficiency, translations and any regulator-specific items. Check the live checklist before paying for evaluations or translations.

Do not count a student clinical placement as employment. CAMLPR distinguishes education and practicum from post-qualification employment when assessing recency of practice.
